چکیده
A sediment microbial fuel cell (SMFC) is a type of microbial fuel cell (MFC) that has recently attracted significantly attentions due to its unique property of removing organic and inorganic compounds from sediments. In this study the experiments were carried out in a dual-chamber SMFC with external resistances 30 kΩ-50 Ω. The SMFC was produced power about 630 mV with maximum power density 40 mW/m and current density 250 mA/m. After 120 days of operation, SMFC removed cadmium and copper about 22.6 and 150 mg/kg, respectively. The SMFC also showed high cadmium (86%) and copper (90%) removal at pH 7.0 and temperature 40 °C. The most dominant bacterial community at anode and cathode was identified as Pseudomonas spp. which could be function as exoelectrogen. The results indicated that the SMFC system could be applied as a long term and effective tool for the removal of cadmium and copper contaminated sediments and supply power for commercial devices.

Biosorption of Cd2+ and Cu2+ from aqueous solution using Gracilaria corticata waste biomass
Pollution of aquatic environments by toxic trace metals has been taking place because of discharge of untreated effluents from many industrial processes. Conventional methods used for removing dissolved heavy metal ions from wastewaters have significant disadvantages including incomplete metal removal, requirements for expensive equipment, high energy requirements and generation of toxic sludge...
متن کاملGrowth and bioaccumulation of cadmium, zinc, lead, copper in Dunaliella sp. isolated from Homa lagoon, eastern Aegean Sea
Present study consists the growth of cell and bioaccumulation capacity of Cadmium (Cd), Zinc (Zn), Lead (Pb), Copper (Cu) by Dunaliella sp. isolated from Homa Lagoon, Eastern Aegean, Turkey. Sterile medium f/2 was used for the cultivation. Growth rate, mean growth rate, relative growth rate and generation time of Dunaliella sp. were calculated for determining the growth of cell. In addition, op...
متن کاملProtective effect of curcumin against heavy metals-induced liver damage.
Occupational or environmental exposures to heavy metals produce several adverse health effects. The common mechanism determining their toxicity and carcinogenicity is the generation of oxidative stress that leads to hepatic damage. In addition, oxidative stress induced by metal exposure leads to the activation of the nuclear factor (erythroid-derived 2)-like 2/Kelch-like ECH-associated protein ...
متن کاملEffects of copper and cadmium on development and superoxide dismutase levels in horseshoe crab (Limulus polyphemus) embryos
Pollution by metals may adversely affect organisms through the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). In this study, we examined the sublethal effects of two metals, copper and cadmium, on horseshoe crab (Limulus polyphemus) embryos. Exposure to copper or cadmium at concentrations of 0.01-10 mg/L for periods of 4, 8, 16 and 24 h had minimal effect on embryo survival except at 100 mg/L Cu....
متن کاملMechanism (S) of Metal-Induced Apoptosis in Saccharomyces Cerevisiae
Heavy metals, such as copper and cadmium have been linked to a number of cellular dysfunctions in single and multicellular organisms that are associated with apoptosis. The yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, provides a valuable model for elucidating apoptosis mechanisms, and this study extends that capability to Cu and Cd-induced apoptosis. We demonstrate that S. cerevisiae undergoes a glucose-de...
